BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU men's golf team and women's outdoor track & field teams were each honored by the Northeast Conference on Friday when the league office announced the 2022 Spring Team Sportsmanship Award Winners.
The men's golf team is coming off a successful season that saw them tie for second at the NEC Championships held in April-May. The team also had two first-team and one second-team all-conference selections in
Kyle Underwood,
Lewis Wright, and
Lukas Gabura, respectively.
Women's outdoor track & field finished second at the NEC Championships event hosted by Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland back in May. Sprinter
Tara Hernandez was honored at the meet as the Most Outstanding Track Performer (Sprints) and distance runner
Kelly Iocca qualified and competed at the NCAA Eastern Regional in the 3000m steeplechase event at the end of May. Overall, the team place 11 performers on all-conference teams.
Instituted by league Presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
