Help spread Shark Nation spirit throughout the year across Long Island University’s campuses and the greater community! 

LIU is seeking highly energetic and motivated students to join Finley's team and become the ultimate ambassador for the University. Only the best of the best will emerge triumphant. So, if you’re a hardworking, team-oriented, and proud LIU Shark, we would love to meet you!

RESPONSIBILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS

Finley's team members are expected to attend and perform at LIU Athletics events and competitions, Long Island University campus events, community events, local, regional, and national spirit competitions, and other events throughout the year! We are seeking performers that can best entertain the crowd—so you must be skilled in dancing, crowd engagement, and interacting with fans of all ages. Previous mascot experience is not required if you have other performance experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform at all home games for football, basketball, and ice hockey, including choreographed cheer/dance routines with the Shark Nation Spirit Squad.
  • Participate in pre-, in-, and post-game promotions including contests, photo opportunities, t-shirt tosses, etc.; meet and greet fans prior to and after games.
  • Perform at Welcome Week programs, including Move-In and Orientation programs, in conjunction with the Shark Nation Spirit Squad.
  • Perform at all large-scale admissions events at the Brooklyn and Post campuses, including Open Houses and Accepted Student Days, in conjunction with the Shark Nation Spirit Squad.
  • Attend select Cheerleading, Dance, and Marching Band practices at the discretion of the programs’ head coaches/directors.
  • Participate in spirit camp prior to the start of the fall semester.
  • Create skits, dance routines, and other forms of mascot-related entertainment and crowd interaction. Research and create props and costumes for the mascot.
  • Perform at Welcome Week programs, including Move-In and Orientation programs, in conjunction with the Shark Nation Spirit Squad.
  • Attend other select University and non-University events as requested, depending on availability.
  • Mascot costume operations, including creativity, care, cleaning, maintenance, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment status at the University (12+ credits for undergraduate students; 9+ credits for graduate students).
  • Maintain good judicial standing with the University.
  • Maintain good academic standing with the University (2.0 cumulative GPA)
  • Must be able to work in a costume. Due to costume restrictions, candidates must be at least 5-feet and 7-inches in height.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work flexible hours.
  • Be well-organized, punctual, and flexible to meet time, priority, and workload demands.
  • Be highly energetic and in good physical condition.
  • Demonstrate an ability to analyze and interpret common social expressions and client needs.
  • Be fan-friendly and outgoing; works well with children and all other community members.
  • A personal mode of transportation is preferred; occasional transportation between LIU campuses may be required.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please submit the interest form below. The Shark Nation Spirit Squad may contact you to schedule an audition after submission. Auditions are by invitation-only and include standard Finley poses and mannerisms as well as a personal performance (i.e., skit, dance, special skills relevant for in-game entertainment, etc.). Personal performances should not exceed two minutes.
