Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, RI – The #17 LIU water polo team won both of their matches at the Bruno Classic on Sunday, defeating RV Brown 14-12 and Saint Francis U., 14-12. The Sharks improve to 4-2 and picked up their second win against a program receiving top-25 votes this season.
SHARK BITES vs. RV Brown
- The Sharks got started early, scoring the first five goals of the game courtesy of a pair of goals from Paola Dominguez and Elena Camarena, along with one more Katie Hinrichs.
- The Shark defense also kept the Bears off the scoreboard throughout the first quarter, to hold a 5-0 lead into the second frame.
- Similar to the first quarter, the second quarter started the same, with LIU striking first, this time off a goal from Jessica Dean.
- Brown found the back of the net three times in a row after that, but LIU nabbed two more goals from Jeannet Garcia and Dominguez to enter the half up 8-4.
- The third quarter started with Brown scoring first, but ended with LIU finding the back of the net twice in the final minutes, with Camarena and Dominguez helping the Sharks to a 11-8 lead ahead of the final quarter.
- Dominguez added two more in the fourth quarter, for her fifth and sixth goals of the day, along with Deba Peiravani tacking on one herself to seal the 14-12 victory for the Sharks.
SHARK BITES vs. SFU
- LIU started their game against SFU the same way they started against Brown, by scoring the first goal of the contest. This time, it was Garcia to strike first for the Sharks.
- The Sharks and Red Flash exchanged goals throughout the first half, and after two quarters of play, the score was knotted at seven.
- The third quarter was all Sharks, with Dominguez, Peiravani, Andrerson, and Dean all scoring twice and Camarena adding one of her own to propel LIU to a 14-7 lead entering the final quarter.
- The Sharks would survive a last second push from SFU to emerge victorious, 14-12, and complete their sweep of the Bruno Classic.
- Paola Dominguez finished the weekend with ten goals to her name across both games, the most of any LIU player.
The Sharks will be back in action on Friday, February 11
th at 5 p.m., when they travel to the Garden State to compete in the Princeton Invitational.
