Box Score 2 PRINCETON, N.J. – The LIU women's water polo team beat Mount St. Mary's 14-9, on day two of the Princeton Invitational. LIU also faced off against #22 Harvard, and fell 9-8 in the first game of the day. With the split, the #17 nnationally-ranked Sharks improve to 5-4 on the year.
Shark Bites vs. Mount St. Mary's
- The Sharks got hot right off the opening whistle, scoring the first three goals of the game, from Paolo Dominguez, Elena Camarena, and Emma Sandro.
- After the Mount got a goal back late in the first, the Sharks once again got hot, with another set of three straight goals, this time from Alejandra Aranguren, Amelia Sanchez, and Jeannet Garcia to push the Sharks up 8-1 midway through the second quarter.
- Mount St. Mary's would score the final three goals of the quarter, but LIU would end the half ahead 8-4.
- The third quarter started the same as the first two quarters with LIU scoring first, this time with Camarena and Dominguez finding the back of the net and extending their lead to 10-4
- LIU would nab two more goals at the end of the third with Camarena and Jessica Dean scoring on a penalty shot to give the Sharks a 12-6 advantage entering the final frame.
- Mount St. Mary's scored three goals, but another pair of goals from Aranguren and Dean helped secure the 14-9 victory for Sharks
- LIU used two goalies as Julia Zebak made four saves in 12 minutes of action with Rebecca Ansell making two saves of her own the rest of the game
Shark Bites vs #22 Harvard
- #22 Harvard scored the first three goals of the game, but a goal from Diba Peiravani broke the Crimson scoring streak and put LIU on the board 3-1.
- With the clock winding down in the first quarter and a man-up, the Sharks beat the buzzer courtesy of a goal from Camarena to enter the second quarter down 4-2
- The Sharks and Crimson each exchanged a goal in the second quarter and at the end of the first half, the Sharks were down 5-3.
- Harvard again started the quarter on a scoring run, but LIU was able to snap it again, this time with Aranguren depositing a shot in the back of the net to make it 7-4
- In a last second push, the Sharks scored four of the final five goals of the game with Dominguez scoring back-to-back goals. Kate Hinrichs and Garcia added goals of their own, but a goal from Grace Thawley of Harvard secured the Crimson's 9-8 victory.
The Sharks will be back in action Friday, February 25
th when they travel to the Tina Finali Invitational with their first match against California Baptist University at
