Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 17 LIU women's water polo team took on the Princeton Tigers in the Princeton Invitational. In an overtime thriller, the Sharks fell to the Tigers, 17-16, in their first game in the Garden State this weekend. Tonight's contest against Princeton was LIU's first overtime contest since February 15, 2020.
SHARK BITES
- LIU got its first goal at the 3:54 mark from Jeannet Garcia, evening the count at 1-1. Elena Camarena added the last two goals to make it 3-3 after the opening frame.
- The second period saw the Sharks scored three goals, with two coming from Kate Hinrichs and one from Camarana. It was a tight contest after two, with the score at 6-6.
- LIU was outscored 4-2 in the third, trailing by two entering the fourth.
- In the final eight minutes, LIU scored five goals, including Camarena's fourth goal of the day to bring the score to 13-12, Princeton.
- With the Sharks trailing by one, Garcia fired in the game-tying goal with one second left in regulation to make it 13-13.
OVERTIME
- The first overtime period began with a Tiger goal to make it 14-13, Princeton.
- LIU answered back to even it at 14 with 2:27 left. Princeton would score with 1:52 remaining to retake the lead. The next time down the pool, LIU responded, to tie it up once more, 15-15.
- On a rebound, Princeton scored to end the first overtime period, 16-15.
- The second period started with another Tiger goal to push the advantage to 17-15. Jenna Anderson cut the deficit to one with a goal with 39 seconds left, but that was all the Sharks could do as the buzzer sounded to give Princeton the win.
- Up next, the Sharks will face Harvard University on Sunday, February 13 at 10:30 a.m. and Mount St. Mary's at 2:30 p.m.
