CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— The Long Island University women's water polo team split the first day at the Harvard Invite on Saturday. The Sharks fell to tournament host, Harvard, 18-8 in the opening match before cruising past Connecticut College, 19-3 in the afternoon session.
Game 1 - Harvard 18, LIU 8
The 17th ranked Crimson held a 2-1 advantage after the opening quarter. LIU got on the scoreboard in the first quarter courtesy of freshman
Alejandra Aranguren. Scoring kicked up in the second quarter as both teams combined for 11 goals with Harvard holding a 6-5 advantage to take a 8-6 lead into the half. Aranguren and freshman
Jessica Dean both recorded a pair of goals in the quarter while freshman
Taylor Thurlow added one goal.
Harvard used a dominate second half outscoring LIU, 10-2 to take the opening game, 18-8.
Aranguren and Dean led the Sharks with three goals each. Freshman
Jeannet Garcia added a team-high two assists. Freshman
Julia Zebak made eight saves in goal for LIU.
Game 2 - LIU 19, Connecticut College 3
The Sharks bounced back in game two with their highest scoring output of the season with 19 goals against Connecticut College.
LIU dominated the opening half, outscoring the Camels 17-3 to cruise to the 19-3 victory for their fifth win of the season.
Five goal scorers finished with multi-goal games in the win. Aranguren and Garcia led the way with five goals each. Dean added a hat trick and freshmen
Jenna Anderson and
Kate Fischer registered two goals each. Freshman
Erin Pascual was the main distributor with a season-high five assists. She added a team-high three steals on the defensive end.
Zebak and freshman
Rebecca Ansell split time in goal for the Sharks, recording six saves each.
UP NEXT
The Sharks conclude non-conference play on Sunday, March 8 with the final day of the Harvard Invite. LIU will take on Bucknell at 9:15 a.m. before ending the tournament against Brown at 1:00 p.m.
