POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.— The Long Island University women's water polo team took on Siena and No. 24 ranked Marist at the 2020 Courtney Fisher Invite at McCann Natatorium. The Sharks opened the day by winning a back-and-forth battle against the Saint, 9-8. In the night cap LIU dropped a 16-8 decision to tournament host, Marist.
Game 1 - LIU 9, Siena 8
Both teams traded goals to begin the first quarter with freshman
Jessica Dean finding the back of the net twice for LIU. The Sharks then closed the first quarter with two straight goals by freshmen
Julia Zebak and
Kate Hinrichs for a 4-2 lead. Momentum continued in LIU's favor to start the second with two more scores by rookies
Kate Fischer and
Jeannet Garcia for a 6-2 lead. Siena would close the half on a 2-1 scoring run to put the score at 7-4 at the half.
The Saints looked to rally out of the half scoring three goals to tie the game up at 7-7. LIU would hold the lead once again with a goal at 1:36 in the third. The Saints made one last push in the fourth tying it up at 8-8 with 4:03 remaining. Hinrichs got the go-ahead goal with 2:08 remaining and the LIU defense would hang on to give the team a 9-8 victory.
Hinrichs scored three goals in the win and added four assists for a seven-point game. Dean also netted a hat trick and dished out a pair of assists.
The Sharks defense tallied 10 steals in the game, led by four steals from freshman
Taylor Thurlow. Hinrichs added three steals and Dean picked up two steals. Both Dean and Hinrichs split the sprint for LIU, each winning two of them.
Freshman
Rebecca Ansell got the win in goal for the Sharks recording six saves to go along with a steal and an assist.
Game 2 - Marist 16, LIU 8
LIU started the night cap against the Red Foxes with the first goal courtesy of freshman
Alejandra Aranguren early in the opening quarter. Marist responded with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Fischer capped the first quarter with a goal to bring the score to 4-2 after one quarter of play.
Marist's offense picked up back-to-back goals to start the second before LIU answered with goals from Aranguren and Hinrichs to bring the score to 6-4 with 2:55 to go in the half. The Red Foxes picked up the last goal of the opening half to take a 7-4 lead into the half.
The Sharks outscored Marist 3-2 in the third quarter taking two-goal deficit, 9-7 into the final quarter. Marist's offense got going in the fourth quarter outscoring LIU, 7-1 to take a 16-8 victory.

The Sharks will take a trip out west for four contests in California. LIU will open up its road trip on Thursday, February 26 at California Lutheran at 10:00 p.m. eastern.
