EASTON, Mass. - The relay team of
Walid Jarfani,
Joshua Roos,
Brian Masai, and
Ryan Bailor won the 4x800-meter relay to close day one of competition for the Long Island University track & field team at the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at W.B. Mason Stadium. The Sharks posted a time of 7:40.24, beating the second-place finisher by more than five seconds.
"I expected our 4x800 men to win because they've done the work and the times were all there," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Stormie Charles. "They did exactly what needed to be done, nothing more and nothing less. I'm incredibly proud of them."
In Saturday's prelims, LIU also placed several student-athletes into Sunday's finals.
Hasnae Goulamzi opened the day by winning her heat in the 1,500 meters with the top-qualifying time of 4:50.07.
Jarfani also won his heat in the men's 1,500, posting the top-qualifying time of 3:56.48.
Aidan Haughian followed with a time of 3:57.17, placing fourth among participants in Sunday's final.
In the men's 400 meters,
Elehchio Scott won his heat and posted the fifth-best qualifying time of 48.51.
Langston Richardson also qualified for Sunday's final with a time of 48.65, a new personal record.
Sage Primus qualified second in the men's 100-meter dash final with a time of 10.67.
In the men's 800 meters, Masai and Bailor both won their heats. Masai qualifying with a time of 1:54.70 (2
nd) and Bailor qualifying with a time of 1:54.88 (4
th).
Alessandra Pastor reached Sunday's final in the women's 400-meter hurdles with the third-best mark of 1:02.40.
Nasir Ali qualified second for the men's 400-meter final, winning his heat with a time of 54.58.
In the final individual competition on Saturday, Primus (2
nd, 21.25) and Scott (4
th, 21.53) qualified for the men's 200-meter final.
After one day of competition, both the LIU men (10 points) and women (11 points) hold seventh place in the team standings. Central Connecticut State University leads both the men's (72) and women's (46) competitions.
