VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Long Island University women's water polo team went 2-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference over the weekend, defeating both Mount St. Mary's University and La Salle University on Sunday.
"Although we had a challenging start to the weekend, the team stayed resilient and maintained a positive attitude," LIU women's water polo Head Coach Morgan Allison-Prokhin said. "They bounced back strong, securing two impressive conference victories on Sunday! We are looking forward to hosting in our home pool this coming Saturday and honoring our seniors."
LIU opened the weekend with a 20-12 loss to Wagner College on Saturday, but bounced back on Sunday with a 21-12 win over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday morning before defeating La Salle 14-12 later that afternoon.
Against the Mountaineers, senior Sydney deVroedt led the Sharks with seven goals, followed by freshman Greta Tadday's five goals, senior Emma Sardo's three goals, two goals each from freshman Olivia Booth and graduate student Kate Hinrichs and one goal from both junior Samantha Boothe and graduate student Elena Camarena, the latter of which led the Sharks in assists (six), steals (five) and ejections drawn (four).
In Sunday afternoon's game against the Explorers, deVroedt and Booth tied for a team-high four goals, with Tadday close behind with three goals in the win. Camarena scored twice, while Sardo finished the game with one goal. Camarena and Booth led LIU with three steals, while Camarena and Tadday each drew four ejections in the win.
LIU returns to Brooklyn this weekend for a two-game set against Virginia Military Institute and Villanova University on Saturday, April 12.
