Sharks Win Two Matches on Senior Day

LIU defeats VMI 24-10, Villanova 12-10

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - In between two wins on Saturday in the Steinberg Wellness Center, the Long Island University women's water polo team honored its three graduating players, as graduate student Martina Giannoni, senior Emma Sardo and senior Sydney deVroedt were all recognized. 

Giannoni, a native of Milan, Italy, was a second-team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference goalie for the Sharks in the 2024 season.  

Sardo, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, was a MAAC Academic Honor Roll recipient in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Sharks. 

deVroedt, hailing from Hollywood, Florida, has earned MAAC Offensive Player of the Week and second-team All-MAAC honors during her two seasons with the Sharks. 

Prior to the senior day ceremony, LIU defeated Virginia Military Institute in dominant fashion, winning the match 24-10 on Saturday morning. deVroedt led the Sharks with seven goals, followed by four goals each from graduate student Elena Camarena and freshman Olivia Booth. Freshman Greta Tadday scored three times, while junior Samantha Boothe and graduate student Kate Hinrichs both scored twice. Freshman Victoria Feliciano and Sardo rounded out the LIU scoring with a one goal each. 

The Sharks never trailed in their 12-10 win over Villanova University, jumping out to an early 7-1 lead in the first quarter before the Wildcats responded with a scoring run of their own, bringing the margin to 9-7 entering halftime. However, LIU held on to the lead for its 18th win of the 2025 season. 

deVroedt led LIU with six goals, followed by three by Booth, two from Camarena and one fron Hinrichs. 

LIU (18-10, 9-2 MAAC) travels to Wagner College for a match on Sunday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
