LIU Women’s Water Polo Improves to 5-1 in MAAC Play

Sharks defeat Villanova, VMI & La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Long Island University women's water polo team continues to stack wins, as the Sharks picked up three more Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference wins in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania over the weekend, defeating Villanova University 11-7, Virginia Military Institute 28-10 and La Salle University 17-12. 

"We had an amazing weekend and are pleased to leave with three conference wins," LIU women's water polo Head Coach Morgan Allison-Prokhin said. "The girls have been putting in the effort at practice and growing together as a team. It's wonderful to see all of that come to fruition in the games." 

LIU opened the weekend with an 11-7 win against Villanova on Saturday, led by a strong first half where the Sharks led 7-3 at halftime. Senior Sydney deVroedt led the Sharks with four goals in the win over the Wildcats, followed by freshman Greta Tadday's three goals, freshman Olivia Booth's two goals and one goal from both graduate students Elena Camarena and Kate Hinrichs. In the goal, graduate student Martina Giannoni recorded 12 saves and had three steals. 

Later on Saturday, the Sharks had their highest-scoring game of the season in a 28-10 win over VMI, where deVroedt once again led the team with eight goals. Six Sharks scored multiple goals in the win; joining deVroedt was Camarena and Tadday (five goals each), junior Samantha Boothe (four goals), senior Emma Sardo (three goals) and freshman Victoria Feliciano (two goals). Camarena paced LIU in both assists (seven) and steals (four). 

The Sharks closed out the weekend with their 17-12 win over La Salle on Sunday, where Camarena scored a team-high eight goals for the Sharks. The win improved LIU to 14-9 overall and 5-1 MAAC play this season. 

Up next for the Sharks is a three-game set in Villanova, Pennsylvania beginning Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. against Wagner College.
