EAST MEADOW, N.Y. —The LIU women's hockey team is playing its best hockey during the most meaningful time of the season, and the Sharks' student-athletes are being rewarded for it.
Maggie Culp,
Anna Fairman, and
Abbie Thompson each earned NEWHA Awards as the LIU women's hockey team continues to control the conference (15-5-2) after an impressive month of January and the first week of February.
Anna Fairman was named the NEWHA Defenseman of the Month for January and also was named the NEWHA Defenseman of the Week for the first week of February after leading the Sharks to their most recent pair of wins, sweeping Saint Michael's 2-1 this past weekend.
Fairman earned her second Defenseman of the Week award after a successful weekend series for LIU against Saint Michael's. The senior from Troy, Mich., tallied four assists in the two games, pushing her season total to a career-best 15 points.
Fairman was plus-two over the two games, leading the Sharks to their 15th win. The Sharks' alternate captain also had an impressive January with solid showings in all seven games for LIU. The graduate student also recorded eight points in January, leading all LIU scorers for the month. The blue-liner added seven blocked shots during the month and ended the month with a goal and an assist in the team's 2-1 overtime victory against Saint Michael's.
Abbie Thompson was named NEWHA Goaltender of the Month for the second time this season, after winning the conference's top goaltending honor in December. Thompson protected the net for LIU in six games in the month of January. She recorded four wins for the Sharks, including a shutout of first-place Sacred Heart and a notable 31-save win over Assumption. In a critical month of the season for LIU, the Thompson held teams to three goals or less, posting a 0.84 goals-against average and a .970 save percentage.
Maggie Culp's overtime heroics earned her the NEWHA Player of the Week. Culp helped guide LIU to a pair of thrilling overtime wins over the weekend, netting the game-winner in both contests. The senior found the back of the net just 40 seconds into the overtime period on Friday, giving the Sharks a 2-1 win. On Saturday, the Sharks again needed Culp's overtime heroics, this time 49 seconds into the extra frame, as LIU picked up the series sweep.
LIU next plays Friday against Franklin Pierce, followed by its annual Senior Day game on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Senior Day ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. at the Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow.
