NEWARK, Del. - The Long Island University women's hockey team opened the 2025 season in strong fashion on Friday night, going on the road to defeat the University of Delaware 4-1.
Following a scoreless first period, the Sharks put 16 shots on the Delaware net in Friday's second frame, including a shot by junior Sam Mathe early in the second period that gave LIU its first goal of the season, assisted by senior Anya Weilandt. Just under 12 minutes into the second period, sophomore Lauren Karl put the Sharks up 2-0 with a goal of her own, assisted by sophomore Crosby Wildfong and junior Grace Babington.
The Blue Hens brought the score within one midway through the third period, but goals by sophomore Drew Dyczkowski and senior Paige Vreeman, the latter of which was assisted by Babington and senior Lisa Schröfl, gave LIU its eventual 4-1 win over Delaware.
Junior Clara Kammholz recorded 24 saves for the Sharks on Friday night, and Wildfong paced LIU with nine faceoffs won.
The Sharks take on the Blue Hens again on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. in Newark, Delaware.
