NEWARK, Del. - The Long Island University women's hockey team (2-0-0) picked up its second win of the early season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Delaware 5-2 on the road.
"It was great to see our team work together to come back from being down 2-0," head coach Kelly Nash said. "It was an incredibly fast-paced, physical weekend to kick off the season with, but helps to set the tone for the rest of it. Proud of what our team accomplished with starting off the season 2-0-0, and we're excited to keep building from it!"
The Blue Hens took an early 1-0 lead in the match with goal midway through the first period, then extended their lead with another goal midway through the second period. However, LIU stormed back to tie the match with back-to-back goals by junior Izzy Krause (assisted by sophomore Drew Dyczkowski and junior Sam Mathe) and senior Milana Butera (unassisted).
The eventual game-winning goal came early in the third period, as junior Grace Babington put the Sharks up 3-2 with her first goal of the season. Babington scored again late in the game, and senior Anya Weilandt's late goal in the final minute pushed the LIU lead to its eventual 5-2 final score.
In the net, redshirt sophomore Victoria Rutnik posted a save percentage of .931, recording 27 saves in the win.
LIU travels to Saint Michael's College on Oct. 10 for its New England Women's Hockey Alliance opener.
