SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Long Island University women's hockey team (3-0-0, 1-0-0 New England Women's Hockey Alliance) opened league play with a road matchup against Saint Michael's College on Friday night, defeating the Purple Knights 1-0 in overtime.
"A lot for us to learn from how we played in that game from all perspectives; how to build on what went well, but also where we need to focus on making improvements," head coach Kelly Nash said. "Glad we stuck with it and were able to bury one in overtime to still come out with the win."
With both teams tied at zero through three periods, the Sharks scored the game's lone goal 3:17 into overtime on a shot by sophomore Drew Dyczkowski, assisted by sophomore Crosby Wildfong and senior Lisa Schröfl.
LIU held the Purple Knights to 11 shots on goal, and only one shot in the third period and overtime. Junior Grace Babington led the Sharks with three blocked shots in the win, followed by two by junior Sam Mathe.
The Sharks take on Saint Michael's again on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m.
