GENEVA, Ohio – The Long Island University men's relay team of
Finn Drysdale,
Maks Wozny, Dani Chocano Fernandez, and
Emilio Garcia won the 800-yard freestyle relay highlighting day one of competition for the Sharks at the Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday. The group claimed the conference title with a new school-record time of 6:39.41.
The Sharks posted two more podium finishes on day one. The women's 200-yard medley relay team of
Amanda Gkeli,
Gabriela Novais Lima,
Allie Bashor, and
Laura Garcia Marin finished in third place with a time of 1:42.65. The men's 200 medley team of Chocano Fernandez,
Marcelo Chauvet,
Ethan Law, and
Alejandro Pascual Del Cid also took third with a time of 1:29.51.
"We needed our swimmers to set the tone on day one and they did that!" said head coach
Jon Pepaj. "We're looking forward to day two with more fast swimming and more hardware."
After day one of competition, the LIU men currently hold fourth place with a team score of 72. The LIU women are in sixth with a score of 60.
Howard University leads the men's competition (145) and Central Connecticut State University leads the women's competition (155).
The NEC Championships continue on Thursday with day two of the four-day competition.
