GENEVA, Ohio – On the final day of competition at the Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Long Island University men's swimming team picked up two more freestyle crowns, completing a gold-medal sweep of the individual freestyle events at the meet.
Finn Drysdale opened day four with a win in the 1,650-yard freestyle, swimming in a conference and school-record time of 15:37.88. Drysdale, who won three individual championships, was a part of one relay championship team, set two conference records, and was a part of two school-record relay swims, was named the NEC's Rookie of the Meet and Male Swimmer of the Meet.
Alejandro Pascual Del Cid followed by winning the 100 freestyle, swimming in 44.90 seconds. It was Pascual Del Cid's second individual and third total title of the meet.
Emilio Garcia took bronze in the same race (45.18).
The 400 freestyle relay team of Drysdale, Dani Chocano Fernandez, Garcia, and Pascual Del Cid took silver with a new school-record time of 2:59.80, missing the top spot on the podium by .18 seconds.
In total, the LIU men won eight event championships this week (6 individual, 2 relay) and finished third in the final team standings (566). Howard University claimed the team title with a score of 883.
"Being the only team in the conference with 12 men, I have to find ways to keep them motivated," said head coach
Jon Pepaj. "That was our goal, win every freestyle event, and our boys did that. Call us Freestyle University!"
On the women's side,
Laura Garcia Marin capped a successful week with a silver medal in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.52). Her championship in Saturday's 400 individual medley final was the lone title of the week for the LIU women.
The relay team of
Gabriela Novais Lima,
Alexandra Ciorna,
Allie Bashor, and Garcia Marin placed third in the 400 free relay on Saturday with a time of 3:27.26.
The LIU women finished in fifth place in the final team standings (454). Central Connecticut State University took the women's team title with a score of 726.5.
"I'm incredibly proud of our swimmers," said Pepaj. "This was a great season with multiple top-three finishes for both teams, conference champions, conference records, school records, and personal bests. We also have the largest senior class with 19 seniors graduating in May!"
