8/16/2023 2:05:00 PM

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU women's hockey team will be well-represented at an International Ice Hockey Federation signature event.

Emma Mörtl and Lisa Schröfl will represent Austria and Anna Fairman will represent China in the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship Division I Group A competition, which begins Sunday and goes through Aug. 26 in Shenzhen, China.

Denmark, Norway, Slovakia, Austria, China and the Netherlands are participating in the tournament with the hope of earning gold and receiving promotion to the top level.

Each team will play five games in a single-round-robin tournament.

The 18,000-seat Shenzhen Universiade Centre is the event site.

Mörtl and Schröfl, both sophomores from Graz, Styria, Austria, had participated in an Austrian national team camp last December.

Fairman, a senior from Troy, Mich., previously represented China in the 2022 Beijing Olympics as well as at the 2022 Division I Group B World Championship. Fairman's maternal grandparents are from China.

LIU opens its regular season with home games against Northeastern on Sept. 29 and 30.
