Men's Lax Finds Scoring Punch with Sean Boll as LIU Family Tradition Continues

2/15/2023 2:15:00 PM

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — If first-year LIU men's lacrosse coach Jordan Levine had any lingering curiosity about how to offset the loss of a handful of top scorers from the 2022 Sharks, senior attackman Sean Boll helped answer the question in the season opener.

Boll produced a career-high six points last Saturday at Merrimack, on two goals and a team-high four assists.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Boll is the leading returning scorer for the Sharks, having tallied 25 goals in 2022.

Before the season, he had been named a captain, along with Brad Beck, Nick Davide, Henry Flocco and Karl LaCalandra.

"We always trust that he is going to make good decisions when the ball is in his stick," Levine said. "We know that good things are going to happen. He's consistent."

LIU returned a modest 47.3 percent of last season's goal scoring, with Jake Gillis (14 in 2022) and Marcin Maleski (11) joining Boll as the returnees who scored in double-digits a season ago.

"Just being a senior and being here for four years now, and being a captain, you feel a little more responsibility," Boll said. "But we have a bunch of guys who are more than capable of stepping up and being big-time players for us this year. I think we're moving in the right direction."

LIU lacrosse is becoming a tradition for the Boll family.

Boll's sister Alyssa played 79 games with LIU spanning five seasons, through last year. A captain like her brother, she earned a spot on the NEC All-Tournament team as a defender and was an IWLCA Division I academic honor roll achiever in 2022.

The siblings overlapped for three lacrosse seasons at LIU.

Alyssa plans to attend Saturday's 1 p.m. home opener for the men's lacrosse team against Lindenwood — as her brother did for her LIU games before arriving from Kellenberg Memorial High School.

"I liked the school regardless, but knowing she was going to be here for a couple of years, the family aspect stuck out to me a little more," Boll said. "A lot of people don't get that opportunity. It was nice having her here.

"During high school I went to a lot of her games, obviously when I wasn't playing. And when we were both here, the doubleheaders were a good time. Family members would come out and watch both games and hang out after. It was good to be able to get everyone together in the same spot."

Boll is following in his sister's footsteps on the academic side as well. Since graduating from LIU, Alyssa has joined Great Neck South High School as a leave replacement math teacher.

Boll, a senior, is majoring in health and physical education. He similarly plans to enter the teaching profession on Long Island after graduating.

Their father Edward teaches physical education in Commack.

"It's kind of going through the family, I guess," Boll said.

As for the Sharks' goals in their first season in the MAAC, Boll added: "The end goal for us is a conference championship. We have the pieces to do it, I think. We're getting better every week. We're not where we need to be. But I think that's what these nonconference games are for — finetuning a bunch of stuff to be where we need to be come conference time.

"I think we can make a run for it."
