BROOKVILLE, N.Y.– The Long Island University men's lacrosse team (6-1, 1-0 NEC) opened conference play for the year with a 20-6 win over Wagner College (2-5, 0-1 NEC) at Shark Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Sharks scored the most goals in a game since becoming.a Division I program and the last time they scored 20 goals was on Apr. 6 of 2019. Junior midfielder
Aidan Zuhoski led the Sharks in goals and points for the day, recording a season-high five goals and two assists for seven points on the day.
Only 30 seconds into the game, redshirt sophomore
Antony Tsakos opened the scoring for the Sharks which was closely followed by sophomore
Charlie Hunnewell 45 seconds later to put LIU up 2-0. Zuhoski scored two goals and had an assist, while Hunnewell and Tsakos each scored two more to end the quarter leading the Seahawks, 8-2.
The second period was similar with the Sharks scoring the first six goals of the quarter to lead, 14-2.
Ben McIsaac scored twice,
Cameron Connolly, Zuhoski, Hunnewell, and
Luke Harris netted those before the Seahawks scored their third goal of the game with 2:34 remaining in the first half. Zuhoski responded for the Sharks with an unassisted goal to go into halftime with LIU leading Wagner, 15-3.
Following the break, Zuhoski scored his final goal of the game 6:15 into the third quarter, with the Seahawks responding only 25 seconds later with a goal to make the score, 16-4 Sharks. Tsakos,
Khairi Sears, Connolly, and
Matthew Gilbert each scored to finish the third quarter leading 20-4.
The Sharks did not find the net in the final quarter and allowed two goals to finish the game with a win, 20-6, against Wagner.
Throughout the first three quarters, the Sharks averaged a goal every 2 minutes and 15 seconds. They outshot the Seahawks, 24-15, on goal and won 21 of 30 faceoffs for the day.
Senior
Shaun Hill recorded 20 faceoff wins on 26 attempts and team-leading 13 groundballs throughout the game.
Ryan Fountain led the team with two caused turnovers.
Goalies,
Tyler Gresh (6) and
Jasper Simon (3) combined for nine saves in the win for the Sharks.
Up next for LIU, they will travel to Syracuse, New York to take on Le Moyne College (2-7, 1-0 NEC) on Saturday, Mar. 21. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
