BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU women's gymnastics team surged out of the gate in its season opener on Sunday at Pratt Recreation Center.
The Sharks opened their season by defeating Yale, 194.400 to 190.125.
LIU's score exceeded its season-opening score from a year ago, in a meet that also included Yale, by nearly four full points.
The Sharks swept all four events on Sunday.
Syd Morris won the vault with a 9.80 in the freshman's first-ever collegiate competition.
Mara Titarsolej won the uneven bars with a 9.925.
Ilka Juk won the balance beam with a 9.775.
And teammates
Ella Barrington,
Katy Koopman and Morris tied for first in the floor at 9.800.
"I am very proud of the team for accomplishing our goals today — to go big on every event, stay focused, hit each routine and have fun," coach Randy Lane said. "The fact that we didn't have to count a fall in the first meet of the season speaks to the character of these athletes and their determination to put LIU gymnastics on the map."
Yale's Sarah Wilson captured the all-around with a total score of 38.925.
"Winning each event individually is only icing on the cake, so to speak, but the team's focus was a total team effort," Lane said. "As a coaching staff, we are very proud of their performances and the overall team effort."
The Sharks next compete at Penn State with Penn and Southern Connecticut on Friday at 6 p.m.
