NIWFA CHAMP! Fekete Takes Epee Title For Women’s Fencing

MADISON. N.J. – LIU women's fencing sophomore and defending national champion Laura Fekete added more hardware to her trophy case this weekend, as she won the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association championship in Epeé. Fekete's win was one of many for the Sharks at the event. Anna Szántay won a silver medal in Foil and Chejsa-Kaili Seck took silver in Sabre.
 
SHARK BITES
  • The annual NIWFA event hosts both team & individual championships, and was hosted at Drew University Saturday.
  • For the team event, foil, epee and saber teams compete in separate round robin formatted championships. A match between each three-member team consists of three bouts. The total number of bouts won determines the team championship.
  • Sixteen fencers in each weapon qualify from the team events for participation in the Direct Elimination Individual Championships.
  • After strong team performances, the Sharks put someone on the podium in each weapon.
  • Fekete beat a Brandeis fencer in the first round, 15-9, before notching a win over an opponent from Rutgers, 15-8. She then had a semifinal win over an opponent from Stevens Institute of Technology, 15-11. In the championship bout, she took on Sarah Gresham from William & Mary, winning 15-10, to earn the Salle Santelli Women's Epee Trophy.
  • In foil, Szántay opened her bracket with back-to-back 15-5 wins over fencers from NYU and Temple. She beat a Johns Hopkins fencer, 15-9, in the semifinals, before falling to Anna Novoseltseva of Temple, 15-11, in the championship bout.
  • Chejsa-Kaili Seck opened her tournament with a 15-8 win over an NYU fencer, followed by a 15-13 win over an opponent from Temple to advance to the semifinals. There, she beat Leanne Chan from NYU, 15-14, to advance to the championship bout. In the finals, Seck dropped a 15-10 decision to Emma Pincus of Temple to earn silver.
  • In the team event, the foil team came in fourth in the standings. The women's epee team tied for fifth in the standings, while the sabre team took seventh.
  • Up next, the Sharks head to Vassar to take part in the NCAA Northeast Regionals, Sunday, March 13.
