EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU men's and women's swimming and diving teams made significant splashes at the ECAC Championships.
Through Sunday, the women's team finished fourth behind Wagner, UMBC and Columbia. The men placed second behind UMBC.
What was most impressive was the amount of school records that were broken during the weekend.
Head coach
Bobby Smith was ecstatic about the level his student athletes performed at.
"I am blown away by the team performance this weekend," Smith said. "We were aggressive. We were confident. We took advantage of every opportunity we had, and it all came together race after race. I couldn't be prouder of this team and more grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it."
Maaike Broersma was named ECAC Swimmer of the Meet and set the new school record for 200-yard back stroke.
Among other school records broken were the men's 200-backstroke (
Benny Karlsson, 149.31), and 400-yard free relay (
Drew Ladner, Daniel Samoulich, Alejandro Pascual del Cid,
Emilio Garcia).
Overall, there were 216 season best swims, 62 personal records and 13 school records broken.
LIU swimming and diving returns to action Feb. 4 vs. Wagner at home.
