BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — LIU men's soccer striker
Emil Jaaskelainen is poised to lead the NEC in goals for a second straight season.
And, no surprise, Jaaskelainen on Tuesday was anointed the conference's Player of the Year.
Jaaskelainen is joined by
André Puente as a first-team All-NEC selection.
Teammate
Robert Winkler earned second-team All-NEC, while
Viggo Svedin earned a spot on the NEC All-Rookie Team.
Jaaskelainen, who hails from Bolton, England, completed his junior season on Sunday with his 12th goal of the season. That goal evened the score in the 80th minute of an eventual NEC quarterfinal setback in penalty kicks against St. Francis Brooklyn.
Jaaskelainen scored a goal in eight straight matches from Sept. 10 through Oct. 9, coinciding with the Sharks' eight-match unbeaten streak (7-0-1). He was named to the MAC Hermann Award Watch List back in August.
Puente, a junior defender from Chihuahua, Mexico, started 16 matches and tallied four goals. He notched the game-winning goal on bicycle kick in victory at Dartmouth on Sept. 10. Three days earlier, he produced his first career two-goal game, at Hofstra.
Winkler, a sophomore defender and team captain from Jena, Thuringia, Germany, handled the bulk of the Sharks' set pieces this season. He started all 17 matches, tallying two goals and a team-leading six assists. He had a five-match assist streak Sept. 7-20.
Svedin, a freshman midfielder from Orebro, Sweden, started 16 matches and tallied three assists.
