BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The first event of the year for LIU women's fencing was successful in multiple ways.
The "LIU Shark Tank Challenge" saw the host Sharks go 5-0 against NJIT, Wagner, Wellesley, Drew and SIT.
"Overall, today's results indicate just how much resolve this team has," head coach
Ivan Lee said. "We faced some struggles in every round, but everyone stepped up in the clutch and they kept the energy going from start to finish."
National champion
Laura Fekete did not compete, but Lee referenced the resilience of his team without its star junior.
"We went undefeated without our national champion, so I expect bigger and better when Laura returns to the lineup," Lee said.
Anna Szántay was the highlight among individuals in the foil, going 15-0 with three wins against each school in attendance.
Additionally in foil,
Khrystyna Sarkisian and
Daniela Perez Leal had records of 12-3 and 8-7, accumulating 35 wins in the event.
In the epeé,
Costanza Greggi had seven wins while
Lu Pekelman had 11 wins in sabre.
LIU is back in action Saturday at the Temple Open.
