MILLSBORO, Del. – The LIU bowling team went 2-3 on the second day of the UMES Hawk Classic, and now stand at 13
th overall, heading into Sunday's bracket play with a 4-6 tournament record. The Sharks faced some of the top teams in the nation Saturday, with strong results.
LIU opened the day taking on #23 Youngstown State, and lost by just a few pins, 877-892. LIU was led by junior
Patricia Kelly's 202.
The Sharks then notched two straight wins, with some of their highest pin totals of the year. LIU beat #25 Monmouth, 1095-972, with four different Sharks registering 200+ games. Junior
Emily Cavanaugh led the way with a 246, while senior
Tyler Karpinecz had a 227. Sophomore
Rhianna Smith bowled a 226, while Kelly had her second-straight strong performance, bowling a 200.
The Sharks followed that up with a win over #16 Saint Francis U., beating the Red Flash, 1004-972. Sophomore
Francesca Rossi and Smith both finished with 214s, while Cavanaugh had a 201.
The strong individual performances kept coming, against two of the toughest teams LIU would face. The Sharks fell to #8 North Carolina A&T by just 22 pins, 949-971. Rossi had a 220 in that match, while Karpinecz had a 200. And LIU wrapped up the day against #3 nationally-ranked Sam Houston State, falling to the Bearcats, 940-1057. Karpinecz led LIU with a 212, while Rossi added a 207.
With Saturday's results, LIU now stands at 4-6 in tournament play, and is in 13
th heading into Sunday's bracket action. Sunday is scheduled for three rounds of playoffs, each of which will consist of Best Four-of-Seven Baker matches.
