BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Charlize Wanner bowled three straight strikes in the final frame to lift LIU to a one-point victory against Delaware State in the winner-take-all seventh round of the Bud Whitman Memorial's Baker finals on Sunday.
She also was named tournament MVP and to the all-tournament team after finishing the Day 1 traditional competition with a tourney-best 219.2 average.
And on Wednesday, Wanner was recognized for those accomplishments at the season-opening Bud Whitman Memorial by being named the first NEC Bowler of the Week of the 2023-24 academic year.
"Charlize out-bowled everyone on Saturday to capture MVP, but what impressed me the most was her clutch performance striking out in the 10th frame to win the title match by one pin," coach
Melissa Kammerer said.
Wanner, a senior from Reading, Pa., had been named an NTCA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete and had been inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athletic Honor Society last academic year.
The Sharks (7-2) resume competition this weekend at the SHU Bowl for the Cure in East Haven, Conn.
