Women’s Swimming Splits Brooklyn Invitational with Merrimack and St. Francis Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU women's swimming team completed its first meet of the year Saturday afternoon in LIU Pool. The Sharks wrapped up the two-day Brooklyn Invitational, hosting the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers and the Merrimack Warriors. LIU split with the two teams, as SFBK beat the Sharks, 173-149, while LIU triumphed over Merrimack, 237-58.
 
The day started out strongly for the Sharks, as a freshman finished in the top three in the first race. Tara Cabiling came in second in the 100 breast, with a time of 1:09.49. And in the next event, the 200 back, LIU swept the top three spots. Junior Amanda Peren won the event, in 2:06.58, while sophomore Jacqueline Grabowski came in second (2:15.18), and sophomore Lydia Amon came in third (2:16.11).

The rest of the first half of the day was highlighted by sophomore Amanda San Juan finishing second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.78), while freshman Reyna Iwamoto took third in the 500 free (5:18.18). LIU also took first and third in the 200 medley relay. The team of Peren, Cabiling, Grabowski and Lydia Amon won, in 1:50.93, while the squad of Gillian Pierce-But, Jeanne Touchette-McGowan, Noemie Lacroix-Moreau and Madison McCarthy came in third, in 1:56. 57.
 
The second half of the meet saw more strong finishes at the wall for the Sharks, including the 200 breaststroke. LIU went 2-3-4 in the event, as Cabiling came in second (2:26.64), Touchette-McGowan came in third (2:29.01), and Mackenzie Burnett finished fourth (2:31.42). Senior Noemie Lacroix-Moreau had one of the top finishes of the day, as she won the 100 back in 1:02.14, while Peren won the 200 IM, in 2:10.98. Sophomore Amanda San Juan came in second in the 200 IM, in 2:17.98, while sophomore Lydia Amon had a third place finish in the 100 free, with a time of 55.80.
 
LIU capped the day with a win in the 400 free relay, as Touchette-McGowan, Amon, Peren and Lacroix-Moreau out-touched St. Francis Brooklyn at the wall, winning the event in 3:39.90.
 
Up next, the Sharks head over the river to take part in the NJIT Invitational in New Jersey, October 11-12.
