BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's swimming team resumed its 2025-26 season with a win over Le Moyne College, 135-126, after earning first-place finishes in nine of 14 events. The men's swimming team won eight of 14 events but fell to Le Moyne, 131-117.
The LIU women had strong showings from sophomore
Amanda Gkeli and senior
Anapaula Gomez Janeiro, who each won two races.
Gkeli took first place in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle and was a part of two first-place relay finishes in the 200-yard medley relay (Gkeli,
Liene Vientiesa,
Gabriela Novais Lima,
Alexandra Ciorna) and 400-yard freestyle relay (Gkeli, Vientiesa,
Janne Niederste-Hollenberg, Novais Lima).
Gomez Janeiro claimed first place in both the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly as well as a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Ciorna (200-yard freestyle), Novais Lima (50-yard freestyle), and
Aryka Bennett (100-yard butterfly) all also claimed first-place finishes for the Sharks.
"We had solid swims from both teams," said head coach
Jon Pepaj. "We won multiple events on the men's side but just didn't have enough depth. It was our first meet back since ECACs. We have been in a training camp for two weeks now and with that in mind, they swam really well."
The Sharks return to action on Jan. 23, where they are scheduled to compete at Wagner College at 5 p.m.
