Indianapolis, IN — LIU women's rugby competed at the CRAA 7's National Championships on May 2 and May 3, coming away with the program's best finish at the competition and securing a seventh-place win.
Competing in Pool C alongside opponents Dartmouth, Davenport, and Penn State, the Sharks opened the tournament with a 42-5 defeat to Dartmouth despite
Kori Fields rising up as a try scorer.
LIU then bounced back with a 21-17 win over Davenport. Initially down 17-0 at halftime, LIU roared back, led by
Emelie Granelli,
Kori Fields, and
RJ Scott – all of whom scored in the second half to help spark the comeback.
Harper Schindler was three for three in conversions.
Continuing to climb, the Sharks followed that up with a 35-7 win over Penn State, led by Molly McPherson (two tries) and additional scores from
RJ Scott,
Kori Fields, and
Sayler Russell.
Despite falling to Life (31-7) and Lindenwood (29-12) in the Cup Quarterfinal and Fifth Place Semifinal, respectively, LIU closed things out on a high note with a 24-20 win over Princeton to secure the seventh-place finish.
Ella Minici led the team with two tries, and
Kori Fields and
RJ Scott also went on to score in the victory.
Harper Schindler (one for three) and
Eve Ursell (one for one) ensured their presences were felt with key conversions.
"We're really happy with our performance at this year's CRAA 7s National Championships. We were able to focus on our team's metrics for success and finish strong with a 3-3 record on the weekend," LIU women's rugby head coach
Dee Nash said. "Our only losses came at the hands of eventual national champions, Dartmouth, and strong contenders, Life and Lindenwood. I'm really proud of the grit and determination that the team showed through the tournament, especially during a big come from behind win against Davenport in pool play. After being down 17-0 at the half, senior captain
Emelie Granelli kicked off the scoring with two of our top 7s players,
RJ Scott and
Kori Fields each scoring after that and
Harper Schindler coming in clutch by going three for three on the conversions. We are really excited for the future coming out of this tournament and are looking forward to bringing this energy back to the pitch for 15's season in the fall."
