PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The 14
th-ranked Long Island University acrobatics and tumbling team entered the day's final event leading by less than a point and held on for a narrow victory over No. 15 Duquesne University, 243.925-243.910, on Sunday afternoon, earning a second consecutive win.
After the compulsory and acro events, LIU trailed, 57.30-57.05, but the Sharks responded by winning the pyramid (28.45-27.50) and toss (25.50-24.85) events to take the lead in the meet. Despite losing tumbling events and the Team Event, LIU squeaked out the victory.
Of note, the Compulsory Acro team of
Arianna Ardilla,
Madysen Bradley,
Raegan Cromwell,
Carlee Izzo,
Danica Prokay,
Logan Lombardi,
Christina DeVincenzo, and
Georgina Moorhouse posted a new season-high score of 9.10.
Makaela Steele recorded 9.125 out of 9.55 in the Open Pass, also a season high.
"Our mindset going into this meet was to fight for every tenth," said head coach
Shelby Armstrong. "All the tenths of points add up so we were looking for the small corrections and areas that we can clean up. We competed well and had only one fall in Acro Heat 2 that set us back. What a fun meet and sweet ending to our spring break trip!"
The Sharks concluded their three-meet week-long spring break road trip with a 2-1 record that included wins over a pair of ranked opponents, No. 9 Frostburg State and No. 15 Duquesne.
LIU returns to action this Friday, March 21, at 6 p.m. versus Caldwell University at the Pratt Recreation Center. The Sharks will celebrate Senior Night and honor their seven-member senior class.
