BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's and women's swimming teams started off their 2025-26 seasons on Saturday morning.
The LIU men's team defeated Manhattan University 171-83, while the women's team split with Manhattan and Saint Francis University, defeating the former 124-42 and falling to the latter 134-86.
LIU won every event in the men's competition, highlighted by junior Mehmet Tasbasi in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, and freshman Mario Poulsen in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, and 200-yard individual medley. The Sharks were led by other strong performances by senior Emilio Garcia (50, 100-yard freestyle), junior Aleksa Vujosevic (50, 100-yard freestyle), freshman Jadon Do (100, 200-yard backstroke; 200-yard breaststroke), sophomore Finn Drysdale (500, 1,000-yard freestyle), and sophomore Maks Wozny (500, 1,000-yard freestyle).
The Sharks again won every event over Manhattan in the women's competition and had outright event wins by senior Anapaula Gomez Janeiro in the 1,000-meter freestyle, sophomore Liene Vientesa in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, and sophomore Julia Allen in the 500-yard freestyle.
LIU returns to action on Nov. 8, when both teams host Wagner College at 11 a.m. in Brooklyn.
