BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A timely basket from Janessa Williams gave the LIU Sharks a chance to send the game into overtime, where they edged the Delaware State Hornets, 65-63.

The teams played a tightly contested game with five lead changes and nine ties. The Sharks overcame a six-point third quarter to outscore the Hornets, 21-17, in the fourth. Williams hit a deep two-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime.

In the extra period, LIU outlasted Delaware State, 9-7. Brianna Mead sealed the victory with two free throws in the closing moments.

Sirviva Legions led the Sharks with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Williams added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Sharks avenged an 84-59 loss to Delaware State last season on the Hornets' home floor.

LIU received strong contributions from its bench, which totaled 26 points. Mead led the second unit with 13 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

The Sharks will travel to Richmond, Virginia, on Dec. 21 for a road game against VCU.
