BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Baronton Terry has been named Long Island University Head Women's Basketball Coach, Director of Athletics
Elliott Charles announced on Thursday. Terry takes over leadership of the women's basketball program after one season as an assistant coach in the men's program.
With Terry on staff, this past season the LIU men's basketball team recorded a 24-11 record, clinched an NCAA Tournament berth, and won the NEC regular season and tournament championships. The Sharks posted their best record since the 2011-2012 season.
Terry began working at LIU during the 2024-2025 school year, serving as the Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities, Events, and Operations.
Prior to joining LIU, Terry was the Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach at Chicago State University for three seasons (2021-2024). With Terry on the coaching staff, the Cougars improved their win total year over year, and pulled a top-25 upset on the road over Northwestern University in Terry's final season.
With the Cougars, Terry developed and mentored two players who declared for the NBA Draft, recruited three top-100 high school prospects, and helped the team maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA. On the administrative side, Terry oversaw scheduling, academic support, budgeting, and overall team management.
Before rising to the collegiate ranks, Terry served as the head coach of several high school boys basketball programs from 1998-2020.
His coaching career began in 1998 at Miami Northwestern High School in Florida, where he garnered back-to-back Miami-Dade County Coach of the Year honors in his first two seasons. Under Terry's leadership, the team won regional championships in four straight seasons from 2001-2004.
Terry then moved to South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, winning three regional championships from 2008-2010. Coaching at West Charlotte High School from 2010-2016, Terry's team won a Class 4A state championship in 2011 and finished as state runner-up in 2012. The team was a Hoodie Award finalist in 2010, a sectional champion in 2013, and a regional finalist in 2014.
In his most recent high school stop, Olympic High School in Charlotte, Terry was named coach of the year in 2017 and won back-to-back conference championships in 2017 and 2018.
Terry also brings a wealth of AAU basketball experience to the LIU women's basketball program, serving as a coach with the EYBL 17s and 16s, a Jordan Brand Game coach, a Nike Elite Camps coach, and a Nike Victor Oladipo Camp coach. He was also the head coach of Team Breakdown 16U and Team United 16s.
Terry holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Florida Memorial University.
In 2025-2026, the LIU women's basketball team compiled a 21-11 record, finishing in a tie for second place in the NEC standings and as conference runner-up after reaching the NEC Championship Game. The Sharks posted their best record since the 2011-2012 season.
