BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — LIU Athletics has strong performers in the classroom and in athletic competition.
That was abundantly clear on Tuesday when College Sports Communicators honored 10 LIU student-athletes with Academic All-District honors: Sean Boll (men's lacrosse), Luke Chandler (men's volleyball), Adam Goodsir (men's hockey), Tindra Holm (women's hockey),
Kelly Johnston (women's lacrosse), Felicia King (field hockey), Devin Matthews (wrestling), Anna Szántay (women's fencing), Lewis Wright (men's golf) and Julia Zebak (women's water polo).
All 10 now advance to Academic All-America consideration.
The criteria for Academic All-District include a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA, strong athletic credentials and having been at the university for a full year, unless the student-athlete is a graduate transfer.
Boll, a health and physical education major, was a second-team All-MAAC selection for men's lacrosse after reaching the 20-goal plateau for the second straight season this spring. He also captained the Sharks and earned a spot on the MAAC All-Academic Team.
Chandler, a business administrator major and captain, was the NEC Men's Volleyball Championship MVP as well as a first-team All-NEC selection.
Goodsir, a data analytics and strategic business intelligence major, joined the men's hockey team as a graduate transfer after a solid undergraduate career at Michigan State. He scored the game-winning goal with 7 minutes, 53 seconds remaining in regulation in a 3-2 victory against No. 12 Ohio State on Nov. 25 as the young program earned its first-ever win against a ranked opponent.
Holm, a sports management major, was a National Women's Goalie of the Year semifinalist. She also was the NEWHA Goaltender of the Year and NEWHA tournament MVP. She continues to compete internationally for her native Sweden.
Johnston, a childhood/special education major, captained the women's lacrosse team this past season. A defender, she started all 17 games as the Sharks again qualified for the NEC tourney.
King, a criminal justice/law enforcement major, was a second-team All-NEC selection for the field hockey team.
Matthews, a sports management major, wrestled at 141 pounds. He also was a National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American.
Szántay, an exercise science and wellness major, earned a fencing silver medal in foil at the NIWFA Championships on March 4.
Wright, a computer science major, was a second-team All-NEC selection in men's golf. He competed last week with the Sharks at the NCAA Regional hosted by Clemson in South Carolina. Wright had completed his freshman season in 2021-22 with program records for lowest average score (min. 15 rounds) at 73.40, most rounds of par of better (11) and birdies (106).
Zebak, a biochemistry major, gutted through a shoulder injury to help lead the women's water polo team to the NCAA tourney in Stockton, Calif., earlier this spring. A goalie, she was previously selected to the MAAC All-Championship and All-Academic teams.
