WEST HAVEN, Conn.– The Long Island University women's lacrosse team (6-5, 3-1 NEC) defeated the University of New Haven Chargers (2-7, 1-3 NEC) on the road Saturday afternoon, 11-9. The Sharks were led by
Julia Trainor who contributed four goals, two draw controls, and a caused turnover and
Erin Harkins who had three goals, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
From the start of the game, the Sharks and the Chargers battled back and forth for the lead through halftime. In the first quarter, LIU allowed the first goal of the game around five minutes into play. Two goals from Harkins and one from Trainor led the Sharks into the second quarter tied 3-3 against the Chargers.
The second quarter was similar with four goals from each side.
Lindsey Lucia opened the scoring only 23 seconds after play started back up in New Haven's zone. The Chargers then scored three uninterrupted goals to take a 6-4 lead over the Sharks. Trainor scored two more and
Abigail Hughes, assisted by
Ava Hernandez added another to the scoreboard to take LIU into halftime tied 7-7.
The Sharks erupted in the third quarter for three goals; Harkins last goal of the game was assisted by Lyons who then added two goals for herself. LIU and New Haven each had four shots on goal during the quarter, with
Skyler Fig saving all four of the Chargers attempts helping LIU to a 10-7 lead at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter, Trainor scored her final goal of the game which was answered by two New Haven goals to finish the scoring. The Sharks earned the 11-7 victory on the road after outshooting the Chargers 21-18 on goal.
LIU caused 10 turnovers for the Chargers, Harkins led the team with three,
Ashley Magee had two, and
Juliana Speziale, Hughes,
Tessa Orgonas, and Trainor each causing one.
Up next for the Sharks, they travel to Delaware to take on Delaware State University (0-11, 0-4 NEC) on Saturday, Apr. 4. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
