DURHAM, N.H. — The LIU women's gymnastics team's strong showing throughout the East Atlantic Gymnastic League season resulted in some major year-end conference honors.
Randy Lane was named EAGL Head Coach of the Year and Olivia Courtney was named EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year, while
Mara Titarsolej shared the EAGL Specialist of the Year honor and
Syd Morris was named EAGL Rookie of the Year.
The awards were announced coinciding with the EAGL Championships, which were hosted by the University of New Hampshire in a pair of sessions on Saturday.
LIU finished seventh of eight teams overall at the conference championships with a score of 194.275.
Titarsolej was named first-team all-tournament on the bars after scoring a 9.875. Morris was named first-team all-tournament on the beam after scoring 9.900, while Titarsolej (9.825) earned second-team honors.
Morris, who had the second-best all-around score in either session (39.225), also earned first-team all-tournament in the all-around.
Titarsolej has been a consistent force for the Sharks for the past two seasons. The junior had a high score of 9.950 on bars and a 9.875 on beam in 2023. As a true event specialist in 2022, Titarsolej has since added back beam for 2023. The Zutphen, Netherlands, native was EAGL Specialist of the Week once in 2023, and Lane said that "her growth, consistency, heart and desire to be better each time she raises her hand to compete is her biggest attribute for the Sharks."
Morris broke the LIU all-around record three times this season. The previous school record was a 38.575 set by
Katy Koopman in the inaugural year for the Sharks in 2021. This is the first year the Sharks have had another athlete compete in the all-around since that time. In addition, the freshman won EAGL Rookie of the Week honors for four consecutive weeks and is tied for the highest all-around score in the EAGL this season with a 39.550. In addition, the Landenberg, Pa., native is tied with Titarsolej for the highest bars score for the Sharks with a 9.950. Morris has also hit an impressive 38 out of 39 routines this season.
Lane led the Sharks to a record-breaking season, surpassing the school record on three different occasions, and surpassing the previous school record (195.075) set in 2022 a total of six times. The Sharks recorded their first regular-season EAGL victory this year, at Pitt on March 10. In addition to breaking the team school record three times, LIU also broke the team vault and floor records and individual records on vault, beam and in the all-around. The Sharks have also scored above 49.000 on all four events this year.
Courtney arrived at LIU in early November and hit the ground running to help the Sharks break both team and individual records. Her primary duties have been coaching beam and floor. She helped the Sharks beat the previous team school record on floor with a 49.275 and helped
Ilka Juk beat her own school record on beam with a 9.975. Courtney was an All-American gymnast while competing for UCLA.
