Women's Tennis Streak Snapped on Senior Day Against Fairleigh Dickinson

Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women's team fell to Fairleigh Dickinson 4-3 on Friday afternoon. The Sharks record moves to 17-4 overall and they finish regular season NEC play at 5-1.

"A tough day in the office and a bit of a heartbreaker, " said head coach Jan Griga. "It just wasn't our day and it happened to fall on senior day, which is a bummer. However, all things must come to an end, and this crazy run we had is no exception. As the saying goes––you learn more from your losses than from your wins, and I think we learned a very important lesson today. Ultimately, we are glad it happened when it did, giving us the opportunity to make the necessary adjustments prior to the conference tournament next weekend. We are looking to bounce back strong against Stony Brook on Sunday. Lets go Sharks!"

SHARK BITES:
  • Before the match, the team celebrated their three seniors Valentina Dancenco, Sofiya Kuzina, and Elinor Storkaas. Between the three seniors, they have won multiple player of the week awards and together claimed the 2021 NEC Conference Title. Kuzina also earned the 2021 NEC Player of the Year Award.
  • As for the match itself, the Sharks got hot fast. They won two of three matches on the doubles court to nab the early 1-0 lead.
  • Jumping to singles play, the LIU doubled their lead to 2-0 with a thrilling three set victory for reigning NEC Player of the Week Valentina Dancenco over Aleksandra Vorozheikina 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.
  • Court four featured continued success for the Sharks with Bianca Compuesto also taking her match in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
  • Fairleigh Dickenson would take matches on the remaining four courts to spoil senior day for the Sharks and win 4-3.
  • The 13-match winning streak was the longest for LIU in program history, including as CW Post.
  • The Sharks are back in action on Sunday, April 10 for their regular season finale when they take on Stony Brook on the road at 12 p.m.
