BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women's rugby team had a big day at home Saturday on Robert Blitz Field. The Sharks, who had senior day prior to the games, hosted Northeastern and Navy for the Sweet As 7s tournament. LIU notched not just its first win of the season, but won the whole event.
 
SHARK BITES

• The Sharks went 5-2 on the day. LIU opened with a 20-5 win over Navy, and followed that up with a 27-0 shutout of Northeastern. Another win over Navy followed, 24-0. LIU lost to Northeastern, 17-7, then beat the Huskies 35-0. NU would rally back in the next game to win, 31-5, forcing a decisive championship game.
• LIU won that championship match, to take the team trophy, 10-7.
• Sophomore Ava Zopf led LIU with five tries and two conversions. Sophomore Megan Burriesce and senior Brianna Thomas were next, as they both had four tries on the day.
• Sophomore Angelina Pollice had three tries and one conversion, while Brianna Gloeckner had three tries.
• Senior Sydney Long had two tries and a conversion, while freshman Gabriella Quiñones and freshman Jade Robinson had two tries as well, and Emelie Granelli added one.
• Up next, the Sharks head north to take on AIC, Saturday, March 19.
