BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU men's soccer team has standouts in the classroom in addition to on the field.
Five members of the team on Tuesday were recognized as Academic All-District honorees from College Sports Communications: goalkeeper
Gianluca Cersosimo, defenders
Henry Haferkorn and
Robert Winkler, and midfielders
Matthias Heiland and
Alan Martinez.
The quintet now advance to Academic All-America consideration.
A graduate transfer from Division II Georgian Court, Cersosimo stepped into the starting lineup Sept. 10 at Dartmouth. He proceeded to go 6-0 with five shutouts in his first six starts. He went 6-4-2 with a 0.65 GAA and an .860 save percentage in 12 starts overall. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cersosimo is pursuing an MBA at LIU after producing a 3.97 GPA as an undergrad at Georgian Court.
Haferkorn, a junior from Germany, entered the season having been selected among the United Soccer Coaches Division I Players to Watch at defender. A team captain and business administrator major with a 3.61 cumulative GPA, he scored the game-tying goal on a header in the 64th minute en route to a 2-1 win against Manhattan on Sept. 14.
Winkler, also a captain, and a fellow defender from Germany, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA as a sophomore biology/pre-med major. A second-team All-NEC selection, he handled the bulk of LIU's set pieces this past season. He started all 17 matches, tallying two goals and a team-leading six assists.
Heiland, a sophomore from Germany, owns a 3.64 GPA as a sports management major. He scored in the 17th minute for the lone goal in a 1-0 win against Stony Brook in the season opener and completed the season with two goals and three assists in 16 matches (15 starts).
Martinez, a Long Islander from Inwood, has a 3.50 GPA as a health sciences major. He started all 17 matches and produced one assist.
LIU went 9-6-2 overall during the 2022 season, which ended with a setback in penalty kicks against St. Francis Brooklyn in the NEC Tournament on Nov. 6.
