BROOKLYN, N.Y. - For the second year in a row, LIU softball graduate student
Patricia Griffin has been named the Northeast Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year for the sport of softball, it was announced by the league Thursday. She shared the honors with Mekenzie Saban of Saint Francis U.
All scholar-athlete award winners have compiled a minimum of 60 semester hours at their institution, maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 and participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team.

Along with the scholar-athletes, the NEC also announced its Spring Academic Honor Roll, consisting of a record 1,585 student-athletes with a 3.20 or better grade-point average. There were also a record 460 student-athletes named to the spring Commissioner's Honor Roll, recognizing those superior student-athletes with a 3.75 or better grade point average.

Over the course of the 2020-21 academic year, a league record 3,747 NEC student-athletes landed a spot on the Academic Honor Roll, a 9.9 percent increase from a year ago. That figure also represents over two-thirds of NEC competitors. Likewise, a record 1,169 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, a 9.6 percent jump from 2019-20.

Patricia Griffin (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) repeated as one of the co-winners of the softball scholar-athlete award. Griffin wrapped her star-studded career with her third All-NEC honor - including a second straight first team selection - and added third team NFCA All-Region plaudits as the table setter for the Sharks, who finished second in the regular season with a 25-7 conference record and reached the championship round of the NEC Tournament. She finished in the NEC top-10 in a variety of categories, including batting average (.373, seventh), hits (44, sixth), runs (32, sixth), stolen bases (11, fifth) and on-base percentage (.444, eighth). Griffin, who was raised in Marlton, NJ, concluded her time at LIU with 197 hits and committed just one error over the course of her career. She has been recognized on the NEC Academic & Commissioner's Honor Roll for an unprecedented six years. Griffin majored in Adolescent Education and is pursuing her Master's degree in School Counseling. She registered a 3.99 grade point average as an undergraduate student and has recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in her graduate studies.

175 spring athletes from LIU made it on to the Academic Honor Roll, and 67 earned a high enough GPA to qualify for the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Women's lacrosse had the highest number of honorees, with 40, followed by men's lacrosse (33), baseball (27), softball (20), women's outdoor track & field (20), men's outdoor track & field (13), women's tennis (9), women's golf (7) and men's golf (5).
