BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University softball team improved to 6-0 in NEC play after defeating Stonehill College 10-2 at the LIU Softball Complex in Brooklyn. With the win, the Sharks completed the regular season sweep of the Skyhawks.
While each team remained scoreless through the first inning, LIU sophomore Samantha Gallegos put the Sharks ahead 2-0 with an RBI single. Two at-bats later, junior Lily Hinkle extended the LIU lead to 3-0 with an RBI single. Senior Devon Medina joined in with a two-RBI single to right field to stretch the lead to 5-0, while junior Jen Rodriguez and junior Jaedyn Lincoln delivered a pair of RBI singles to extend LIU's lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
Gallegos then stretched the lead to 9-0 with another two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. While Stonehill put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, senior Nyae' Villalta closed out the game with an RBI single in the infield to end the game in a 10-2 LIU win.
Rodriguez and Hinkle tied for a team-high two hits in the win, while Gallegos posted four RBI in the win — a career-high for the Camarillo, California native.
In the circle, sophomore Ava Fairbanks earned her third win of the season with four strikeouts, five hits surrendered, and two walks across three innings pitches.
LIU begins a three-game series at FDU on Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m.
