HACKENSACK, N.J. — The Long Island University softball team continued its unbeaten start to NEC play on Saturday, defeating FDU 3-0 on the road.
Both teams remained tied at zero through the first four innings of Saturday's game, though junior Lily Hinkle put the Sharks ahead with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the fifth inning, sending home junior Kaylee Clarkson.
Looking for insurance, senior Nyae' Villalta recorded a two-RBI double in the top of the seventh inning, sending home senior Devon Medina and sophomore Hannah Burnett, to put LIU ahead 3-0 in the ballgame. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore pitcher Ava Fairbanks struck out the side, ending the game in a 3-0 LIU win.
Senior Sarah Wall earned her second win of the season, pitching five innings with four strikeouts and only two hits surrendered. Fairbanks recorded four strikeouts in two innings pitched.
Hinkle, Villalta, junior Jen Rodriguez, and senior Gigi Clavel all had one hit in the win, while Villalta led the Sharks with two RBI. Hinkle, Medina, Clarkson, and Wall each stole a base in the win.
LIU returns to the diamond on Sunday, March 29, for a doubleheader against the Knights beginning at 12 p.m.
