PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The LIU water polo team improved to 3-0 Saturday, with two big wins on the road. The Sharks beat LaSalle in game one of the day, 14-10, before notching a huge 16-12 win over Villanova in the night cap.
LIU 14, LASALLE 10
The first game of the day was scoreless for the first seven minutes, until
Elena Camarena scored a goal to get LIU on the board, 1-0. She scored a man up goal a minute later to make it 2-0, and
Jessica Dean added a goal to make it 3-0 Sharks.
Alejandra Aranguren would score with 90 seconds left in the first, and LIU led 4-0 after one.
In the second period,
Diba Peiravani found the back of the cage twice, before
Paola Dominguez scored to put LIU up at the half, 7-3.
In the third period, Dominguez would have another goal with an assist from
Jessica Dean, and she would score twice more in the third period to make it 10-6 for the Sharks. Peiravani would score once more in the third, and LIU led, 11-8 heading into the final period.
Peiravani scored back to back goals in the fourth, along with a goal on a penalty shot for Camarena, and LIU took the 14-10 win.
Julia Zebak had 10 saves for the Sharks in the first game.
LIU 16, VILLANOVA 12
In the second game of the day, LIU consistently outscored the Wildcats, winning every period but the fourth.
Dominguez finished with six goals in the win, while Camarena had four. Sophomore
Taylor Thurlow had two goals in the win, while Aranguren, Dean,
Jeannet Garcia and freshman
Faith Ocheskey also scored in the victory for the Sharks.
Up next, the Sharks host their first-ever water polo match in Brooklyn, welcoming Virginia Military Institute to LIU Pool, Saturday, April 17.
