NORTHRIDGE, Calif.— The Long Island University opened up its west coast trip on Saturday with matchups against No. 20 CSUN and Cal Lutheran. The Sharks fell to the Matadors, 13-9 before getting edged out late by the Regals, 11-10.
Game 1 - CSUN 13, LIU 9
LIU opened the game with a goal in the first minute by freshman
Jessica Dean. The Matadors ended the period on a two goal run to take a 2-1 lead. The second quarter was a high scoring affair with nine goals in the period. CSUN outscored LIU 5-4 in the period to take a 7-5 lead at halftime.
The Sharks looked to chip away at the deficit with a goal by freshman
Kate Hinrichs in the first 20 seconds of the third quarter to make it a one-goal game. CSUN created separation with a 4-1 scoring run from there for an 11-7 advantage. The final quarter was evenly matched with two goals apiece for the Matadors to earn a 13-9 win.

Julia Zebak registered seven saves in goal for the Sharks.
Game 2 - Cal Lutheran 11, LIU 10
The Sharks started off strong in the evening contest against Cal Lutheran with three first quarter goals to the home team's one goal. Hinrichs opened the scoring while Dean netted a pair of goals in the first quarter. The Regals opened the second quarter with a 3-1 scoring run to tie the game up at 4-4 but Hinrichs found the back of the cage once more to give LIU the 5-4 lead at the half.
LIU carried momentum over to the third as freshman
Jenna Anderson and Dean scored back-to-back goals in the opening minutes for a 7-4 LIU lead. The Regals battled back with a 4-1 scoring stretch to tie the game up at 8-8.
In the fourth quarter, the Sharks once again started out with the first two goals courtesy of Anderson and Dean to take a 10-8 lead with 6:43 to go. Cal Lutheran netted two goals with just over five minutes remaining to tie the game at 10-10. Both teams continued to battle as the quarter wore on but the Regals netted the game winning goal with nine seconds remaining to take the 11-10 win.
Dean led the Sharks with four goals and won all four sprints against Cal Lutheran. Hinrichs added another hat trick, making it four straight games with three goals for LIU. Zebak recorded 10 saves in the cage.

The Sharks head down to San Diego on Sunday, March 1 for two contests at UC San Diego. LIU opens play against No. 2 Stanford at 4:00 p.m. eastern before closing out the weekend against the No. 10 Tritons at 7:00 p.m. eastern.
