NEC CHAMP! Peren Sets New Conference Mark for Swimming on Day Two of NECs

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The LIU women's swimming team exceeded expectations on day two of the 2020 Northeast Conference Championship meet, Thursday night at the Nassau County Aquatics Center. The Sharks currently sit in sixth place in the team standings, without the benefit of diving.

The highlight of the day for LIU was the performance of junior Amanda Peren in the 200 IM. After swimming the fastest time in the prelims, she was the favorite to win the night's event, and she did just that. In addition to becoming an NEC champion, though, Peren also shattered the school, meet and conference record in the event. Peren won the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.30, which shattered the previous meet and conference record of 2:01.88, which has stood since 2015. And Peren didn't just set a new record by over a second and a half, she also beat the entire field by three full seconds, dominating her competitors.

The Sharks had strong performances throughout the night to bolster the team standings. In the 500 free, sophomore Amanda San Juan finished tenth (5:01.80), while freshman Reyna Iwamoto came in 14th (5:06.11), and senior Noemie Lacroix-Moreau came in 16th (5:11.39). Lacroix-Moreau actually had one of the strongest performances of the day, having won a swim-off earlier in the day to qualify for the B finals in the event, with a time of 5:08.89.  In the C finals, sophomore Macie Madden dominated her heat, winning in 5:05.63, while sophomore Maja Uduc came in third in the heat, with a time of 5:09.91.

In the B heat of the 200 IM, juniors Jeanne Touchette-McGowan and Kyleigh Barao also scored points for the Sharks, coming in 12th and 15th, respectively.

And in the last event of the night, the 200 free relay, the squad of Jacqueline Grabowski, Lydia Amon, Aidan Condit and Amanda San Juan scored crucial points for LIU, coming in sixth with a time of 1:37.28.

Up next for the Sharks is day three of NECs. Prelims begin at 10 a.m., Friday, February 21. The day's action will feature the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 400 medley relay.
