BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Long Island rivalry will be renewed on Sunday, Jan. 26 when the Long Island University wrestling team grapples with Hofstra University inside the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
The Sharks and Pride will meet on the mat for the first time since the 1987-88 season in what will be the ninth all-time dual between the two squads. Sunday is the first meeting since LIU reinstated wrestling during the 2014-15 season.
LIU enters the match with a 2-16 dual record and will be searching for its first Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association victory on the year, while Hofstra boasts a 3-5 dual record with a 1-0 mark in EIWA duals. The Pride most recently took down Binghamton University on Jan. 12 by a 25-11 margin.
Redshirt-sophomore
Ryan Ferro was impressive at 165 last weekend for the Blue and Gold, earning a decision victory against the University of Pennsylvania. Despite winning just one bout, sophomore
James Langan had a strong showing at 174, earning a late takedown to cut the match to two points.
Sunday's 165 bout will be the weight to watch as Ferro takes on Ricky Stamm who boasts a 12-8 overall record this season. Despite the strong record, Stamm has not earned more than four points in a bout this season, earning 10 wins by decision and two wins by major decision. The Pride will also be led by Justin Hoyle at 133, Reece Heller at 149, and Zachary Knighton-Ward at heavyweight. The trio of Hofstra grapplers have combined for 39 wins this season and 11 pins.
Tickets will be sold at the door on Sunday for all fans in attendance at a rate of $10 for adults and $3 for children. For those that cannot make it to Hempstead, the match will be streamed free of charge and will be available online and on all streaming devices through the CAA.tv app. Live results will also be provided through Track Wrestling.
