BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Long Island University wrestling team will kick off its 2020 calendar year with a dual match against Bloomsburg University on Friday, Jan. 3 and will continue its action at the David H. Lehman Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall University on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The Sharks begin its weekend in the Keystone State against the Huskies at 7:00 p.m. inside the Nelson Field House against the Huskies. Friday will mark the first dual matchup against Bloomsburg since LIU reinstated wrestling during the 2014-15 season.
The Huskies are looking for their first dual victory, starting the year 0-3 against Bucknell University, Rider University, and Lock Haven University. Trevor Allard leads Bloomsburg with 12 victories overall on the season, while Josh Mason and Jarrett Walters boast nine wins. Allard and Nate Newberry are unbeaten in dual matches this season, starting 3-0 individually.
Allard also enters the match ranked in several national polls, earning a composite ranking of No. 17 to begin 2020. The redshirt-senior ranks as high as No. 11 in the Amateur Wrestling News poll and is on pace to become the 19th member of the Bloomsburg 100-win club. With 84 wins in his career, Allard would become the first Husky since Mike Dessino and Richard Perry eclipsed the mark during the 2014 season.
LIU will wrap up its weekend at the David H. Lehman Open. The open format competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will span across 10 mats. The competition will follow NCAA rules, using 3-2-2 periods and riding time will also be used. There will be no team scoring for the event and each weight bracket will feature a double-elimination format.
