Gillet Scores Twice, Women’s Rugby Falls to Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Despite a pair of tries by sophomore Maqueisha Gillet, the Long Island University women's rugby team fell 62-17 to Mount St. Mary's University Saturday afternoon at Echo Field.

The match was played 12-on-12 with three 20 minute periods. Due to National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) guidelines, the official score was listed as 28-0.

Along with Gillet's tries, senior Janine Gelles also went 2-of-2 on her conversion attempts and also successfully completed a penalty kick.

The opening stages of the match belonged to the Mountaineers, as they took a 24-0 lead after the first two periods.

In the third period, Mount St. Mary's expanded its lead to 38-0 but LIU showed resilience and fought back as Gelles completed a penalty kick that put the Sharks on the scoreboard.

The Mountaineers would then take a 50-3 lead but Gillet used her speed to score a 50-meter try, which was successfully converted by Gelles.

Gillet would score once more and Gelles would continue her accuracy off the kicking tee to make it a 50-17 score line. The Mountaineers then added more points to the scoreboard and held out for the 62-17 win.
