BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's rugby team will make the trip to Harrisonburg, Virginia, for a matchup with Queens University of Charlotte on the East Campus Lower Turf on the campus of James Madison University on Saturday, September 14 at 2 p.m.
Notes on the Sharks
LIU has an 0-2 record on the season, most recently falling 34-14 to Sacred Heart University on Saturday, September 7 at Robert Blitz Field. Sophomore duo
Maqueisha Gillet and
Sydney Long both scored tries while senior
Janine Gelles successfully converted both attempts. Senior
Caitlin Johnstone had one assist for the Sharks and Gillet had two runs over 20 meters.
Freshmen
Lynsey Danko and
Nakoya Hayes led the amtch in tackles with 10 while freshman
Haniyah Baugh had two steals at the tackle.
On the season, sophomore
Calah Turpin along with freshmen
Sara-Grace McCannon and
Haniyah Baugh have scored tries as well as Gillet and Long. Johnstone's one assist also leads LIU, as does Gillet's three runs over 20 meters. Gelles has been extremely accurate, going 4-for-5 off the kicking tee for the Sharks.
Defensively, freshman
Lynsey Danko leads the team with 18 tackles and freshman
Nakoya Hayes is second with 15. Sophomore
Brianna Thomas has 13 while seniors
Caitlin Johnstone and Gelles along with Gillet each have 12.
Danko's four steals at the tackle leads the Sharks and Baugh's three rank second.
Scouting Queens
Queens is contesting its first (National Intercollegiate Rugby Association) NIRA season in program history, welcome nine newcomers to its squad for the 2019 season and were chosen sixth of nine teams in the 2019 NIRA Tier II Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Royals have played one match so far in 2019, topping Sacred Heart 62-35 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on Saturday, August 31. Antares Lance led the Royals with three tries while Alle English and Jenna Klenx scored two each. Abby Berberich, Angelica Rodriguez and Sarah Awad each score one try for Queens while English added five conversions and Awad one.
